Katarina Witt began ice skating when she was five. Her talent soon became obvious as she enrolled to a special school for kids with a flair for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. She was introduced to Jutta Muller here. Witt made her mark by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught the attention of everyone. Olympic victory at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. Her victory four years ago was a bit more tense. The free skate she took was not a success, however her gold medal came from the performance she put at both mandatory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt was the first female to take home a gold medal in both male and female figure skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating after her accomplishments as a movie actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Despite not winning the gold medal, she was a hit with the spectators. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
